National Women's Martial Art Federation
Special Training 2010

Linda and I just returned from the National Women’s Martial Art Federation’s Special Training, (NWMAF ST) July 15-18, at Swarthmore College, in Swarthmore Pennsylvania. It is a beautiful campus. We had a great time and learned a lot in a short period of time.

The NWMAF holds ST each year in a different location. I attended my first in 1996 at Wheaton College in Norton, MA.  This is was my 8th  ST.  Attending gives female martial artists an opportunity to train with other female martial arts from all over the world. There are many levels and many different styles of martial arts; internal and external styles, weapons, mat work and more.

We also had the privilege of seeing Shihan Linda “Ramzy” Ranson awarded the Coleen Gragen Award of Inspiration.  Shihan Ramzy is one of my favorite Instructors. She owns and operates her own Fuji Ryu Jujitsu dojo in the Bronx. I had the opportunity to participate in her Self Defense training “on the mat with Ramzy” at this years ST.

Professor Coleen Gragen was the founder and head instructor of Hand to Hand Kajukenbo Self Defense Center, in Oakland, Ca. She had trained in the Martial Arts for over 25 years and held a 8th degree black belt in Kajukenbo. Recognized nationally and internationally for her martial arts and teaching skills, she was regularly selected to teach at the National Women's Martial Arts Federation (NWMAF) and the Pacific Association of Women Martial Artists (PAWMA) yearly training camps. She sadly passed away in 2002 after a two year battle with ovarian cancer. Professor Gragen is remembered as a powerful woman for whom the practice of martial arts was a path to physical and mental development, personal liberation and spiritual growth.

Our last class on Sunday was an Arnis class with Sensei Beth Holt held outside under some trees on this beautiful campus.

Next year's training will be in New York. It is well worth attending.  Some of the Instructors are already planning a quad training, 4 hours of mat work.

Monday and Wednesday mornings

Classes designed for all levels. Students will adapt a practice based on their own ability, age, flexibility, strength and injuries.

When done intentionally and with proper alignment, yoga practice can help to repair joints, decrease stress, increase strength and flexibility, and prevent and heal injuries. Regular yoga practice can also help one to achieve a healthy weight!

Jeanne teaches a gentle power flow yoga based on her training in Viniyoga, a style of yoga taught by Gary Kraftsow and transmitted by T. Krishnamacharya and T.K.V. Desikachar.  Her classes incorporate Pilates, Qigong, Chakra balancing and Relaxation.
